For the first time in 28 years, a
Prime Minister of India set foot on Australian soil. This long overdue feat was
achieved by Narendra Modi very recently as he visited Brisbane and Sydney and
delivered his speech on further empowering the Indo-Australian ties. Here's a
highlight of the key points of his speech:
1. He emphasized his "Make
in India" policy and tried attracting the investors over there by
highlighting the 49% FDI policy in the defence sector and 100% in the railways.
2. He expressed pride in catering
to the needs of the global workforce, with its "250 crore hands". He
appealed to foreign investors to come and invest in the 1.25 crore market in
India. Special emphasis was laid on investing in the railways.
3. He proposed obtaining
Liquefied Natural Gas from Queensland and praised the advanced mining
industries over there.
4. He promised Visa on arrival
for Australians coming to India.
5. And the best part, in order to
woo the voters over there, he announced a two month deadline for the merger of
OCI and PIO.
Promises, they say, are meant to
be broken. But is it the same when you're standing on foreign soil and being
greeted by the foreigners and natives alike? Only time will tell.
