Case of IPL Spot fixing

The IPL has never been a stranger to controversies. But it hit new grounds with the IPL Spot Fixing Scandal of 2013 when news broke of the arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players - Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan. It didn’t stop there. Eleven bookies were also simultaneously arrested. The case seemed to get deeper when one arrested bookie Sunil Bhatia was allegedly involved in fixing IPL as well as BPL. Around the same time, actor Vindu Dara Singh’s call records reflected his frequent contact with Chennai Super Kings and BCCI president N. Sreenivasan's son in law Gurunath Meiyappa and was thus arrested for alleged links to bookies in this spot fixing. After the arrest of Gurunath Meiyappa, the CSK franchisee immediately disowned him. The main reason for the immediate disowning of him was that, his arrest could lead to termination of the CSK franchise. Further, On March 25, 2014, N. Srinivasan was asked to step down as BCCI president to ensure a fair investigation into the betting and spot-fixing charges levied against his son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan.

In the meanwhile, Supreme Court of India appointed a one member committee headed by Justice Mukul Mudgal to investigate into these allegations. The board also announced enhanced anti-corruption measures, including two more security personnel with each team. Justice Mudgal prepared a report which was not made public. BCCI handed out life bans to Sreesanth and Chavan after Sawani's probe found them guilty of fixing.

There have been new developments in the case recently. Mudgal committee has submitted its final reports. Gurunath Meiyappan’s voice sample has been confirmed in IPL Spot-Fixing Case through a tapped conversation. The report states there’s enough material against Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of BCCI top honcho N Srinivasan, for his alleged involvement in betting during the 2013 IPL matches. Gurunath Meiyappan is out on bail.
